Our CEO named Patient Advocate of the Year
Dr. Angie Settle, CEO of WVHR, was named Patient Advocate of the Year by the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (NAFC) Aug. 24 during their annual symposium.
This national honor is for a person who amplifies patients’ voices and ensures that their needs are central to decision making. For nearly three decades, Angie has dedicated her career to WVHR, making it her life’s mission to ensure that patients who are too often overlooked have both access to healthcare and a voice in shaping it.
“I’m so grateful to be able to do this work alongside such a talented team of caring staff and dedicated volunteers who show up every day to make sure that anyone, no matter their income or insurance status, can access quality healthcare,” Angie said. “I will continue to fight for every West Virginian, ensuring that they can continue to receive the care they need.”
Angie also presented at this year’s symposium on the power of storytelling and became a new board member of the NAFC. Day in and day out, we’re so grateful for her leadership.
Packing for good
We joined more than a dozen organizations from around Charleston for the 19th annual Backpack Attack, presented by 107.3 The Beat and Salango Law. We helped to fill 300 backpacks with essential school supplies to help students, and their families, start off the school year on strong footing. We’re grateful to be able to continue to participate in this event and lift up as many students as we can.
Flood relief continues in Weston
We continue to support Weston after devastating flooding swept through the community in July. Our Mobile Clinic and Mobile Teaching Kitchen returned to the area for a second visit, offering a homecooked meal and free tetanus vaccines, hygiene kits, and first aid.

Our kitchen is on the move!
August brought many opportunities for our Mobile Teaching Kitchen to share practical, healthy recipes and in-person demonstrations. We sponsored the Wellness Day at Charleston’s 36th annual Multifest, offering free samples of our Chili Lime Chicken Wraps in addition to free workout classes and more.
We headed north to Jackson County alongside our Mobile Dental Clinic to offer dental screenigs and our tasty street corn during Ripley’s Back-to-School event. We even booked it over to Hinton to attend the Festival of Rivers. And we headed south to Logan County to spend the afternoon with the Recovery Group of Southern West Virginia, whipping up tacos and mango salsa in a live cooking demonstration, while offering blood pressure checks, weight measurements, and individualized BMI reports.
