A positive environment is a must-have in Dr. Bowe’s line of work. She specializes in addiction psychiatry and sees an array of patients who need substance abuse treatment through medications, psychotherapy, and social services. Dr. Bowe recognizes the need for a holistic approach to addiction healthcare and believes if you impact one person’s life, you’ve impacted many.
“Addiction is a disease that affects all aspects of someone’s life—including spiritually, physically, emotionally, and socially,” said Dr. Bowe.
“Chronic substance use actually changes the brain, and it’s nearly impossible to quit an addiction without professional help. WV Health Right is providing a crucial service to our community as we navigate the opioid epidemic in West Virginia, and I believe every physician in our state should be involved in finding substance abuse solutions for our patients.”
Inspired by one of her father’s life lessons—to choose a career that gives back to the community—Dr. Bowe was actively looking for volunteer opportunities that could fit into her schedule, when she learned through a coworker about WV Health Right’s need for volunteer providers. Four years later and Dr. Bowe is still providing equitable healthcare to our underserved neighbors.
Meaningful work isn’t the only thing that keeps her returning to volunteer at WV Health Right year after year. The uplifting environment her colleagues have created at the clinic helps Dr. Bowe feel like family and, in turn, benefits the patients who are treated there.
“Being in the healthcare field has made my own life better—the field is full of rewarding connections, not only with patients but with other people in the community who also care about serving and giving back to others.”
