August 2023 Newsletter

WV Health Right sponsors the 16th annual Backpack Attack.

Hundreds of families lined up outside of local radio station 107.3 The Beat in downtown Charleston on August 17th to receive backpacks stuffed with school supplies.

WV Health Right was proud to take part in the event, providing important items such as pencils, scissors, glue, crayons, and markers to ensure that kids in our community are prepared to start the school year on a good foot. Around 500 backpacks were distributed in total.

Support Our Building Expansion Campaign

What stood as an empty lot just a short while ago is now the solid foundation of a three-story addition to our main East End Clinic. In a matter of months, the scaffolding will be removed, and the rooms will be transformed into warm and inviting behavioral health offices, dental and vision clinics, and an expanded on-site pharmacy. We can’t wait to welcome volunteers and patients into our new building’s halls!

Art in the Heart of Our CommUNITY Wellness Center

We recently celebrated the unveiling of a gorgeous new mural at our CommUNITY Wellness Center on Charleston’s West Side. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to check it out!

We had so many great visits in August!

CEO Angie Settle was busy this month giving tours to the WV State Office of Rural Health, Truist, the State Dental Director Dr. Jason Roush, the Secretary of the Department of Health Dr. Sherri Young, Maier Foundation, The Health Plan, Prime, Inc., and the President and CEO of WVU Medicine/Thomas Hospitals Dr. Greg Rosencrance. Each visitor toured all three facilities, the mobile dental and mobile medical units, and got the rundown of all the programs we offer to the community and the mission of WV Health Right.

We also received generous funding from Delta Dental for our mobile dental unit and dental clinic, and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia for our mobile dental unit and Remote Area Medical—RAM ® clinic in October. We’re looking forward to sharing our story with more people next month! Please contact Dr. Angie Settle (asettle@wvhealthright.org) if your organization is interested in touring.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

“You get back way more than what you give. Every time I walk out of there, I just feel so good that I’ve helped someone. I don’t need to be paid. I’m being paid with the smile on your face.”

—Dr. Michael Tupta, DDS

Patients often cry (happy tears!) after seeing how dentist Dr. Tupta has restored their smile.

He’s spent nearly 25 years volunteering with WV Health Right, a testament to his belief that every West Virginian deserves to be healthy, regardless of whether or not they can afford health insurance.

West Virginia Health Right Volunteers

Volunteer Opportunity

WV Health Right is looking for volunteers to help us out at this year’s Remote Area Medical—RAM ® pop-up clinic offering free dental, medical, and vision care to our community from October 21st to 22nd.

Both general support and volunteer medical care is needed! Please be in touch if you’re interested in helping provide our neighbors in need with access to vital care.

Feed the docs!

Ensure all volunteers are fed for the full 48-hour RAM event.

Contact Angie Settle to sponsor at ASettle@wvhealthright.org or 304-414-5931.

Summer’s not over yet! Try Shayla’s Seared Salmon Summer Salad with Minted Watermelon.

This recipe is a favorite of Shayla, our West Side Clinic and Wellness Center Site Coordinator and cooking class instructor. We’re now taking sign-ups for our upcoming round of classes beginning in mid-September!
