Meet our #WeCareWV Day Volunteer Team Leaders
We’ve got a team of rock stars ready to lead our volunteers as we provide free medical, dental, and vision services in our second annual #WeCareWV Day.
Pulmonologist and state Senator Dr. Tom Takubo will lead our medical services, which will range from chronic disease management and preventative screening to help folks avoid costly ER visits.
Dr. Chris Stansbury, co-founder and partner at West Virginia Eye Consultants in Charleston, will oversee our vision team in providing free eye exams, prescription glasses, and more.
Finally, Charleston’s Dr. Michael Tupta will lead our dental care, which will range from cleanings to dental extractions.
We are so grateful for their support in leading a team of more than 150 volunteers to help our neighbors have walk-up access to high-quality care at our Charleston East End Clinic on Oct. 18.

WVHR awarded $250,000 in opioid settlement funds
The Kanawha County Commission voted this month to award a quarter million dollars from the county’s opioid settlement funds to support our recovery programs.
We are incredibly grateful to the Commission. This will make a huge difference in supporting our behavioral healthcare work, our peer recovery support programs, and even our Prepped to Serve program, which helps people in recovery start on a new career path.
“This will allow us to help more people find the support they need to enter their recovery journey and start a new chapter,” said Angie Settle, CEO of West Virginia Health Right.

Our Mobile Teaching Kitchen is on the move
We’ve been busy traveling across West Virginia to share healthy recipes and live cooking demonstrations from the streets of Charleston all the way north to Barbour County.
On Aug. 1, our kitchen on wheels visited Charleston’s highly attended Live on the Levee, and then we traveled north to Belington to share healthy recipes, cooking demonstrations, and health screenings with attendees of the Barbour County Fair on Aug. 29.
And next month, this hands-on teaching model will be sharing our healthy eating ideas at Charleston Westside’s Community Health Fair on Sept. 6.

WVHR supports local students in 18th annual Backpack Attack!
We teamed up with 107.3 The Beat to give out hundreds of backpacks to children living in the Charleston area earlier this month. The packs were filled with the supplies students will need to succeed in school this year. We’re honored to be able to continue supporting local children as they return to the classroom this fall.

Prepped to Serve Appalachia is preparing for a new class
If you’re looking to make a change in your life, it’s not too late to apply for our fall Prepped to Serve class. Come train with James Beard Award winner Chef Paul Smith, and learn what it takes to work in the kitchen and front of house. The course begins Oct. 7.

Recipe of the Month: Hernshaw Fried Rice
Turn your leftover rice into a full meal packed with protein with our Hernshaw Fried Rice recipe. Using garlic, ginger and mixed veggies of your choosing, this dish can get even your littlest eaters excited for what’s on the table.
Recipe created and crafted by Shayla Leftridge in WV Health Right’s CommUNITY Wellness Teaching Kitchen and in collaboration with Hernshaw Farms.

It’s not too late to sign up as a volunteer or sponsor at our October #WeCareWV Day. Whether you’re a medical professional with limited time to volunteer or you’re looking for ways to make a difference in your community, we are still in need of volunteers and sponsors.
